Urban Decay All Nighter Foundation Review

As soon as I saw Urban Decay post about this foundation and it’s release I knew I had to try it! What I look for in a foundation mainly is longevity. I need foundations to last all day and look amazing for 12+ hours. That’s me personally and what I want in my kit for clients.

I struggled with trying to find my colour because all reviewers and bloggers said it oxidises. I initially ordered shade 6.0 and by looking at the bottle it was too dark for me and if it oxidised I would have looked orange! So I returned it straight away.

I decided to go in store to swatch it and ended up ordering shade 5.0 from Feelunique (15% off you click here)

The shades:

There are 24 shades to choose from and shades that end in .0 have a yellow undertone and shades ending with .5 have a pink undertone. I wear NC30 in Mac, Stromboli in Nars and 5.0 is perfect on me.

The packaging:

I love love love the packaging, it’s a lovely gunmetal slim tube holding 30ml of product for £27. It looks so pretty on my Vanity and really stands out. The material of the packaging doesn’t stain so when it gets dirty it’s easy to clean. The shade is also visible through the asymmetric cut outs which is nice too.

Price:

30ml for £27 which is cheaper than other high end foundations I have tried like Nars, Dior and Estee Lauder and because it’s full coverage, a little goes a long way! So I know this will last me a long time.

Described as:

‘A modern matte finish that never looks overdone. Long-lasting wear. Revolutionary formula is also comfortable enough to wear every day. The All Nighter Liquid Foundation is completely matte- but never flat (and it’s oil-free!). Formula is loaded with insane amount of pigment (about 3 times as much as their Naked Skin Liquid Foundation) so a little goes a long way. There is no need to apply multiple layers. Waterproof, paraben-free, diffuses light to blur flaws for beautifully perfected skin as it mattifies and absorbs oil to reduce the appearance of shine. Also equipped with an airless pump – so it’s easy to get out every last bit of product’ – (Urbandecay.co.uk)

If you have oily skin this foundation will be your best friend. I have oily skin (more combination in the cooler months with dry under eyes and patches around my mouth and on my cheeks) and I absolutely love this foundation. If you have dry skin don’t be put off! simply exfoliate, moisturise and prime well with a hydrating primer and you’re good to go! On my dry patches this didn’t cling or crack which is amazing. Foundation tends to break up around my oily nose but this stayed flawless ALL DAY! and I mean all day (6am till 8pm) and my skin still looked flawless. It even stayed put at the gym (I don’t recommend wearing makeup to the gym but for the purpose of the review I tried and it didn’t break apart!).

How I recommend you use it:

I use 1 pump (pea size) with a foundation brush and that is all I need for my entire face for a full coverage finish! I’m amazed at how truly a little goes a long way! even with 1 pump, there is some left over. I don’t apply foundation directly with a beauty blender because I find sponges soak up and waste product. I always apply foundation with a flat foundation brush, buffing brush or a flat top kabuki brush, this gives me the most coverage without wasting product and I end up using a lot less foundation this way! Right at end I pounce the damp sponge on top when the foundation is almost dry to give it that ‘airbrushed’ finish with no streaks.

Without primer and without setting the foundation– So I tried the foundation with no primer, just moisturiser and no setting powder which still lasted 12+ hours with blotting in between. It did crack slightly around my nose without a primer and I did have to touch up because I got a little oily on and around my nose, my chin and forehead. Usually I am extremely oily without primer and setting foundation but with this foundation it wasn’t that bad!

With primer and set with powder – I never skip primer and powder but when reviewing foundation I try it both with and without. So above I explained how it wore without primer and powder but with primer and powder this foundation looked flawless ALL DAY. And I mean all day! I wore it at 6am till 10pm one day and I didn’t touch up, it didn’t crack around my nose like foundations usually do, my skin looked amazing and I was so surprised how blurred and perfected my skin looked for so long! I went to work, went out to dinner, ate, smoked shisha and came home to my base still in place!

  • The primer I use with this foundation is the YSL Blur Primer and a bit of the Inglot Matte Primer.
  • To set my entire face (excluding under eye area because I don’t apply foundation there) I use either the Mac studio fix powder foundation or the Urban Decay pressed powder foundation (reviewed here)

 Flash photography test:

Below are some unedited, unfiltered and untouched pictures taken with flash when I wore this foundation. As you can see it looks flawless on camera! LOVE LOVE LOVE.

More tips:

If you have oily skin:

Make sure you moisturise well with a light but hydrating moisturiser (not something thick and heavy that will stay on your face) something like the Bobbi Brown Vitamin Enriched Face Base – this stuff is my holy grail and I will forever repurchase it! or La-Roche Posay Hydraphase Intense UV Light and prime with a smoothing/pore-filling/mattifying primer. I personally like to use a smoothing primer all over and then a mattifying primer on the areas I get really oily. Make sure you press primer into the skin. I love the YSL Blur Primer which is great for all skin types, the Inglot Matte Base, MUFE smoothing primer and the Benefit Porefessional primer.

If you have dry skin:

Make sure you exfoliate and moisturise well. I love the Embryolisse Lait-Creme Concentre and it is a staple in my kit. You can get this from Cultbeauty here. And then using a hydrating primer that will help the foundation glide on and not accentuate dry patches. I like using Mac Prep+Prime Face or the Too Faced Primed and Poreless. Glycerine and Rosewater solution from Boots is also great because it hydrates the skin and glycerine helps makeup stick. I also recommend spritzing your face after makeup with a hydrating mist like Mac Fix+ or the Mario Badescu rosewater spray. I also recently made my own hydrating mist because I ran out of Fix+ and needed something ASAP. I will share this recipe soon because it’s working so well for me and my clients! It completely takes away the powdery look especially if you are heavy handed with powder like I am! or if your skin still looks dry and needs some hydration at the end or later in the day.

My verdict:

A million thumbs up from me! I absolutely love this foundation and haven’t stopped raving about it to everyone since. I know a lot of you girls have direct messaged and snapchatted me asking about my opinion because you want to buy it. I highly recommend you all to try and refer to my tips above according to your skin type. It’s honestly such a great foundation, with amazing coverage that can be built up on areas you need it without looking flat and cakey. It can also be sheered down with some facial oil or illuminating drops if you like a more dewy finish. I love me a good matte, full coverage foundation and this is exactly that with pros such as:

  • longwearing
  • love the fact that it comes with an airless pump so every last bit of the foundation will be used
  • doesn’t crack and break apart once primed and set
  • it’s light weight yet full coverage
  • a little really does go a long way because it’s packed with pigment
  • it didn’t break me out
  • blurs imperfections and makes your skin look airbrushed
  • photographs beautifully (no flashback)

Let me be very honest and tell you guys that I have never agreed with every single claim a product has ever made let alone a foundation, till now!

Yes it’s a matte finish but doesn’t look cakey. It blurs out flaws instantly, you don’t even need to correct underneath. I have darkness around my mouth and this covers it perfectly without the area looking odd or ashy! Despite it being full coverage it feels so light on the skin I am in love! It doesn’t feel like a mask and sets to a beautiful matte finish.

Love that is has an airless pump

Cons:

  • it oxidises 2-3 shades darker. Which is a con because it makes it hard to find your shades. I struggled myself but shade 5.0 oxidises to match me perfectly. I highly recommend swatching a few shades in store, walking around for an hour and checking in daylight which shade oxidises closest to your skin tone.

That is honestly my only con with this foundation! once you find your shade this foundation is a godsend! Need I say again that I love this foundation? LOL

If you have tried it let me know how you found it and if you try it after my recommendation, I’d love to hear your thoughts and feedback so please do message me or leave a comment here or on my Instagram.
